So much more than just a van.....
We have received a generous offer from a wonderful supporter to match a dollar for every dollar we raise to contribute towards a new van. This amazing opportunity will make a huge impact on Akina Ties Haven and the community members our programs help.
We love our current little van but it is no longer reliable or meets our growing needs, so it's time for her to retire and make way for a bigger, higher, more efficient family member. Vehicles in Kenya are EXPENSIVE (the taxes are killer), with the new van costing $40,000 AUD or 22,000 GBP. It's a lot of money, but it is an essential item for the work we do.
This is what your doubled donation will be making possible:
Community Outreach Program
There are approximately 50 families who we keep in contact with, many are in remote areas and all have little or no support from relatives or neighbours. They are child led families (children raising children, no adults in the home), widows and single parent families, often with very little food and no way of accessing medical attention or medication. With a reliable vehicle we will be able continue to support these desperate families.
Empower Girls and Women
Disadvantaged and vulnerable girls and women will walk for hours from neighbouring villages just to attend our empowerment programs. This is dangerous and exhausting. The van will enable us to collect them from their homes.
Fire wood for cooking
With a larger reliable vehicle staff will be able to collect adequate amounts of fire wood in one go, without damaging the vehicle. Saving both time and money.
Collect Water
The Akina Ties Haven relies on rain water, but with 20 plus people, if it only takes a few days of no rain and the staff must make the journey to the river to collect water for drinking, washing and cleaning. The new van will mean more water can be collected.
Transporting the Akina Ties children, here there and everywhere
With up to 20 children in our care, there are school runs, medical appointments, emergencies, and everything else that goes with having a large high needs family.
